Amazon discontinue Prime Pantry in the US

Almost 8 months after we waved goodbye to Amazon Pantry in the UK, Amazon Prime Pantry is discontinued in the US. According to reports, Amazon stopped selling products under its Amazon Pantry brand earlier in the week.

Amazon Prime Pantry was one of Amazon’s first steps into food & grocery. The service first launched in the US in 2014 as a place where members could choose among thousands of items, including food and beverages, alcohol, beauty and personal care items, household products, pet supplies and save a trip to the store. The service, initially only for Amazon Prime members later became a $5 subscription option.

“As part of our commitment to delivering the best possible customer experience, we have decided to transfer Amazon Pantry selection to the main Amazon.com store so customers can get everyday household products faster, without an extra subscription or purchase requirement,”

It is interesting to see Amazon stopping the service whilst we are in the midst of a pandemic but it looks like the marketplace would rather give customers the freedom to buy their essentials without needing to pay for a subscription service.

The products will still be available on Amazon’s site, just without the pantry brand attached to them and Prime members in eligible locations will still benefit from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods.
