Following a live reading of her new book Girls Rule to the children of Magic Breakfast at Amazon’s Black Friday Live, Alesha Dixon explains the inspirations behind the novel as well as her thoughts on the importance of reading.
Alesha Dixon says giving her daughter characters to identify with inspired her to start publishing her own stories claiming, “I have an eight-year-old daughter who loves reading books, but I didn’t feel she could identify with the characters. It’s important to get children reading and it’s also important to inspire them to read”
The singer and TV presenter, who shares Amazon’s passion for reading and great books, hosted a live reading of new book Girls Rule to a room of school children at Amazon’s Black Friday Live saying: “Children are my best critics because they are really honest which is why I love writing books for them. I want to encourage kids to read books and visualise being able to do something they’ve never done before. This book is full of love, teamwork and lots of positive messages”
Alesha, who is currently isolating at home, joined the Q&A via video call and answered questions from a local school, in partnership with charity Magic Breakfast. When asked about her characters, she said “All of my characters have positive qualities and I’d like them to reinforce the fact that you are perfect the way you are, everyone has something to offer”.
She went on to give advice to the children in the audience about becoming authors themselves stating, “Start small, take baby steps. Think carefully about the location, characters, or themes and never doubt yourself – there is never a bad idea. Once you’ve got that, keep building from there, never put too much pressure on yourself”.
“We believe reading is absolutely an essential part of the health of our society; and our mission is to inspire readers of all ages by making it easy to read more and get more out of reading. Alesha’s books are beautiful, smart, and relatable and we were so honoured she shared her latest book with these children today at Black Friday Live.”
